Why a Fiction Author Should Increase their Vocabulary
There is a vocabulary that fiction authors use regularly. You can learn other vocabulary so that you have many words you can choose from when writing. When you are a fiction writer it is best if you use verbs, nouns, modifiers and adjectives that best bring out the writing. How well you put together the words and the words themselves make up for good writing. When a novel you are reading is engaging, you will easily get into it. After reading and enjoying the novel, reread it again. The goal is to examine how the work was written. Put your focus on the creative aspect of the writing, this entails how the plot and characters were developed as well as the technical aspects such as grammar. Be mindful of the fact that American and British authors write differently.
The difference in use of some words, punctuation and spelling are the places these authors differ. For example, among is used by the Americans and amongst by the British. Writing for either the American readers or British readers each have their standard of rules that you should stick to.
Expanding the base of the vocabulary fiction authors know is important and it is possible to do. Doing this is possible when they are reading another author’s work. Noting down any new vocabulary that you come across is very important. This seems to be general knowledge, but most authors do not usually do this. Besides it being a logical thing to do, it is one way of building your vocabulary. To make categories that suits your needs, get a notebook or any other means you desire. Be keen when listening to people talk, or when reading and even conversations on the TV. Be mindful of verbs, nouns, modifiers and adjectives or any compound nouns being used. You will be amazed about the words you already use, the ones you didn’t know about and those you never thought of using. Keeping a list of the words or phrases that your characters might occasionally use is important. For example for the eyes, use a phrase like ‘her eyes surveyed the room’.
When you take note of such words or phrases, you are able to be creative enough to vividly describe what is going on internally and externally concerning your characters. Such a list will help you rephrase your words and write authentic and creative vocabulary. The first draft you make should use this list.
